I'm certain that I'm not the first to have this insight, but it sure looks like the foxes are minding the henhouse at the S.E.C.
Todd Levin has a racist aunt, and he called on her to share her opinions of the various regions of the country. I thought this was very funny, since her opinions mirrored those of my weirdo coworkers in the Philadelphia suburbs. They didn't think too highly of me or the Great Plains region, but, more to the point, I thought they were overtly racist and small-minded, much like the racist aunt. Here's her map of the US in .pdf form and an inferior .gif version. Readers who have listened to me gripe about those creepy people now have a wonderful insight into the way they think.
I found a new blog earlier this afternoon, No War Blog its a group blog (hive-blog?) with people posting opinions from across the political spectrum about why the war with Iraq is a bad idea. I've already included it in the right sidebar, which is basically my bookmarks, anyway.
As if you needed another reason to quit smoking, the BBC is running a story about research that suggests nicotine itself can harm the body in significant ways. Researchers at Scripps Research Institute suggest that nornicotine - which is produced when nicotine is processed in the body - can "burn" proteins in the body, "the chemical equivalent of cooking." This in turn can shock the body and produce other irregular reactions in the body.
I finally added two pictures to The Mirror Project that I've been meaning to get up. One is from a coffeeshop in Tulsa, and the other is from Jimmy Houston's van. Here's an old one I took in Philly.
I haven't been reading The Register as much as I used to, so some of y'all might think this is hella old, but I think its worth blogging anyway. Many of my readers may have received those "419" scam emails, inviting the recipient to help reclaim a sizable wad of cash in Nigeria. The first time I received one, I found it reminiscent of the David Mamet flick, The Spanish Prisoner.
Anyway, The Reg now offers a T-Shirt that reads, "My Money Went to Nigeria and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt." I couldn't say it better myself.
Update: After I posted this, I ran across this story in Slate that asserts that 419 scams are driving the market for Internet access in Nigeria.
Hey y'all, I was watching Frontline last night, and they aired a show about how Ford, as well as NHTSA were painfully aware of how prone SUVs are to rollovers, yet vetted a new model, the Ford Explorer, because it was not significantly more dangerous than other SUVs.
The best part of the documentary came at the end. As they interviewed a a politician in Austin about a bill to make SUV makers liable, a crash was heard, and the politico said, "Oh my God." An SUV had just crashed in front of the capitol steps.
...and they say "beebopterismo"
I saw over on bOINGbOING that our friends at the University of Iowa have mapped musical tones to space radiation, giving you the opportunity to "listen" to space. I've seen projects like this before on the droneon list, but what seems unique to me, is Terry Riley and the Kronos Quartet have created a musical composition based on space noises, which is being performed live tomorrow in Iowa City.
Riley listened carefully to some crackling and squealing patterns from the magnetic field the Galileo spacecraft discovered surrounding Jupiter's largest moon, Ganymede. "It sounded to me like a voice saying, 'beebopterismo,' so that's the starting point for one of the movements," he said. "Beebopterismo" comes just before movements named "Planet Elf Sindoori" and "Earth Whistlers," Riley said. Here's bOINGbOING's writeup of the event.
