I'm trying to get into Art History 386N "Art, Science, and Technology in the 20th Century" next semester, but the class filled quickly with Art History students. The professor asked me to write a description of my interest in the class, and, after writing it, it seems like a good overall description of what I do in school, so I'm posting it below. I should tweak it a little to replace the way out-date-bio I have on this site.

I would loosely describe my areas of interest as "social history of media technology" and "alternative media online." In the past I've written papers on topics like pirate radio, hardware hacking, and Weblogs as alternative media. In film classes, I'm sure I annoy students with my comments about how telephones are used for signifying power, etc, so looking at representation of technology in texts is something I'd like to explore further. Of course, I haven't seen the syllabus, but a research paper I would like to write is about the net.art of the late 1990s like Electronic Disturbance Theater or other ways that technology, social movements, and arts worlds intersect like in the Surveillance Camera Players. More generally, I'd say I'm a humanist studying technology, grasping for classes that suit my interests.

There must be dozens of faculty at UT who do something that connects technology with art/culture/communications/humanities/etc., but what the hell:

Do you by any chance know Bruce Hunt in history? I know him through our kids and have enjoyed some layperson's-level chat with him about the "Victorian Internet", the pernicious effects of the early days of radio on Texas politics, and such topics.
