point in the near future

The first concert I ever saw as a teenager was The Dead Milkmen at Tulsa's late, lamented Ikon. I had to sneak out of the house with Jay and Eric because of some tensions with my mom. It was good guilty, fun. Now it seems kind of embarrassing to say they were the first band I ever saw live, but I know plenty of people who claim dorkier first shows. With that context, I'll say I am sad to learn that Dead Milkmen bassist Dave Blood committed suicide Wednesday.

That is sad. I never saw the Dead Milkmen or even knowingly heard more than a couple of songs, but I have a Dead Milkmen story anyway.

Around 1987 or so old housemate of mine named Debra was about to move to Philadelphia to grad school, so I assembled a sort of alternative Welcome Wagon for her by sending off for a bunch of Philly zines and whatnot that were listed in the pages of Factsheet Five. For some reason the Dead Milkmen were on the list. They wrote back a nice letter, sending swag of their own as well as a pile of other Philadelphia paraphernalia, and even making polite inquiries about the possibility of dating Debra. :-) Not every up-and-coming band would have been so friendly.
