make salsa not war

I decided to make some salsa during Bush' speech tonight, and, perhaps appropriately, I made some good, weapons-grade salsa this evening. Its easy to make and totally delicious.

2 medium grapefruit
2 ripe habaņero chiles
.5 red onion
3 medium garlic cloves
.5 teaspoon salt

Cut the rinds off the grapefruit, leaving as much pulp as you can intact. Add to blender with onion and blend at low speed. Be sure to cover the blender during this step or you will have a sticky, sloppy mess. Pull the stems off of the chiles and add to blender. Either crush the garlic into the blender jar with a press or peel and mince the garlic, then add to jar. Add salt, then set the blender to high speed and puree for a minute or two. Chill for a few hours, then enjoy.

Yummm!! Coincidentally, my parents are in town this week and my mom made tacos and her infamous fire-green salsa... I don't know what she does to these Jalapenos, but they end up HOTTER, in my opinion, than Habaneros... I discovered tonight that my dad also has figured out how to make an amazing tomatillo salsa; very tasty with a delayed one-two-three punch of hot. mmm... Sounds like it may be time for a salsa-thon?

Incidentally, I made a more conventional tomatillo salsa, as well, so it was a salsathon of sorts up in this joint. But, there's an idea: an Austin Bloggers salsathon, perhaps to coincide with this year's JournalCon.

on a related note ... downtown on sunday I saw someone in the peace rally with a sign that said "Make pancakes not war. Everyone loves pancakes."

what makes salsa "weapons-grade," exactly? Do you add a dash of plutonium? If the salsa is in fact weapons-grade, can we drop it on the Iraqis? Could we eat this salsa in lieu of going to war, in addition to going to war, or either?

Questions abound.
