I've done the numbers and I'm probably better off getting a national cell phone plan than to continue using a landline phone for long distance, so I've been doing some comparison shopping for cell-phones. Now that you can get a T-Mobile Sidekick (or Danger Hiptop, for geek-speakers) for free after rebate, I'm super tempted to get one of these devices, since I would like to also have a mobile device for checking email, since its gonna be a long time before I can get a notebook computer. On the other hand, owning a feature-rich mobile device seems a little too decadent for the m4dd4wg, so I keep delaying a decision. Just now, I found another reason I should delay my purchase: this site suggests color Hiptops are on their way. Anyway, I should probably get a cheap vanilla cell phone and shut up.

So I got one of these in December and have had it for a couple months. I'm happy with it. I didn't get quite the great deal they have now -- I think mine was $100 after rebate. Doh.

What I like:
- the keyboard is great
- web browser is quite well-done and works with most sites. The image rendering is really clear even though it's B&W.
- it fits in my pocket
- integrated AIM
- I've been pleasantly surprised by the coverage, although it's still definitely not up to AT&T around where I live
- it is terrific for settling disputes/bets about trivia. I was at a poker table two weeks ago and got these two guys on either side of me to shut up talking about whether Farrah Fawcett was under 40 or over 50 by pulling up her IMDB entry in about thirty seconds. Me and my friends are constantly arguing about trivia so it's been good for that.

What I dislike:
- I don't think there's a way to disable the flashing wheel light. Since my long-standing habit is to put the contents of my pockets on the table next to my bed, it wakes me up at night (it's a bright light). I've started putting my phone under a shirt at night.
- There's no dual ring & vibrate mode
- The ringtones are pretty bad, and there's no way to download polyphonic ring tones (yet)
- The volume control for ringer and listen volume is the same. I usually like my ringer quite loud and my volume really low.
- Battery life is really short. I've gotten in the habit of keeping it charging when I'm at work and at home. In my experience I can't go much more than 24-36 hours on a full charge.
- like most new techs, the accessories are expensive. I think it was $30 for a car charger.
- no real 3rd party apps (yet)

Other:
- If you hand someone your phone to talk, they generally think it's a bad phone. This is because the speaker is off-center and traditional phone users aren't used to holding it on that angle. I am used to it and actually prefer the angle.
- the "camera" it comes with is pretty toy. I've seen some blogs that publish the miniphotos it produces but I haven't used the camera since the day got the phone.
- mobile blogging.

So the negatives are mainly nits. I've been recommending the device to my friends. The biggest issue most people have is switching to T-mobile, both for coverage and number-changing reasons. That was my biggest issue too, but a friend convinced me they weren't that bad and that's what I've found too.

There's a ton of good informative reviews on them out there. Plus the SDK is finally getting released so some 3rd party apps should be coming soon.
