Alex and I actually got in a heated argument about a month ago related to my choice of Pabst Blue Ribbon over Lone Star. Lone Star, for those of you outside of Texas, is the republic's own cheap beer. Six-packs of 16 oz. cans sell for $3.89, and you can taste every penny. Anyway, I was browsing the Pabst homepage and Lone Star is made by Pabst! Pabst's site is pretty informative - it shares the colorful history of the Pabst organization, which is also responsible for Old Milwaukee and Colt 45. Although Pabst was founded in Wisconsin, it is now headquartered in San Antonio.
I actually toured the lonestar brewery with my dad and stepmother. Cool place. I don't care what the texans say, though. Don't drink that stuff.
Posted by: loophole at November 19, 2002 02:47 PMYeah, that stuff is rugged. Pabst is actually my brew of choice these days. Do they have Abita brand beer in Tulsa? The bar all the RTF people go do has pints of Abita Turbodog for $2, and its my pick over Shiner or the corporate "chemical swills" for the same price.
Posted by: m4dd4wg at November 19, 2002 03:13 PMNo. I've never seen it here. I used to drink it when I was living in Houston. Lots of restaraunts there served it. Very decent.
Posted by: loophole at November 20, 2002 12:16 PMIt's strange, but PBR is taking over Philly in the past year or two. It used to be Yuengling all the way, but I guess people are sick of it. Honestly, it's a better cheap beer than PBR. What's Abita Turbodog like? I assume it's local?
Posted by: lurvig at November 20, 2002 01:26 PMActually, Abita is from Lousiana, and after seeing in it a bottle, I remember it at the Wurst House, which also carried Lone Star in bottles, a development that now seems like a crime against nature. Abita Turbodog has kind of a strong hops-y flavor, but its not overwhemling like Sam Adams or other yuppie brews.
Posted by: m4dd4wg at November 20, 2002 01:30 PMHehe, next time I'm at 43rd & Baltimore Ave, I'll have to check it out. Perhaps they have it at the Foodery (not that I'm over there that much either).
Posted by: lurvig at November 20, 2002 02:47 PMActually, they do have Abita Turbodog at the Foodery - it's a great microbrew from New Orleans. I first drank it when I was down there and have tried to pick it up at the Foodery or other similar beer establishments when I see it. Another great, great beer is Xingu. it's Brazilian.
